INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

Intellectual Property is the area of law which, through laws, guarantees to inventors or those responsible for any production of the intellect - whether in the industrial, scientific, literary or artistic domains - the right to obtain, for a certain period of time, a reward for the own creation. According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), inventions, literary and artistic works, symbols, names, images, designs and models used by commerce constitute intellectual property. Intellectual property covers two broad areas: Industrial Property (patents, trademarks, industrial design, geographical indications and protection of cultivars) and Copyright (literary and artistic works, computer programs, internet domains and intangible culture).

The National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) is the body responsible for the protection of Industrial Property in Brazil carrying out procedures related to trademarks, patents, industrial design, technology transfer, geographical indication, computer program and integrated circuit topography (sui generis protection) .

The National Library, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro and its state offices of Copyright Offices, are responsible for the registration and registration of artistic and intellectual works.

Currently, the UFMA protections are mainly through Patent Request Deposits (67 deposits made) and Computer Program Registries (27 records made).
