The Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA) has just announced the deployment of solar energy systems on its campus. The contract with the company Obras Sol Eletrificaçãos for the installation of photovoltaic generators was signed on February 20 by dean Natalino Salgado. The initiative aims to reduce electricity costs.

"The system is an alternative for lowering electricity costs, not to mention that it is the best option for us to use clean energy and contribute to sustainability," added Salgado.

The contract provides for the acquisition of kits for the generation of photovoltaic energy. The savings generated by photovoltaic panels, according to the superintendent of infrastructure at UFMA, Wener Santos, will be around 5% to 10% per month, with electricity. Today, the university's annual consumption is approximately R$ 15 million.

The signing of the agreement took place through UFMA's term of adhesion to a federal act. “UFMA will become one of the main points of solar energy capture in São Luís,” said Wener Santos, adding that for this purpose, the buildings that consume the most energy on the campus were mapped in order to start installing them. The planning of the installation schedule and the tasks for execution had the collaboration of professors Clóvis Oliveira and Vilemar Gomes, from the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Institute of Electrical Engineering.
