Financial problems faced by MACSS motivated the creation of the Fondation University of Maranhão, maintained by the Federal Government, which brought together all the colleges that existed until then, and gave rise to the current Federal University of Maranhão, in 1966. This institution received in 1967, by donation from the Government from the State, a part of the area of Sá Viana’s camp, equivalent to 241 hectares, for the construction of the future Bacanga’s University Campus, according to State Decree-Law nº 1972/59.

The Bacanga’s Campus, opened in 1972, with the construction of the Chairman Humberto de Alencar Castelo Branco building, is the main relationship space of the Federal University of Maranhão, where they are concentrated: the highest density of people and the highest flow intensities that characterize the university system.
